Got the Honda itch again.........Project EG6.....

Post by Nissota on Sun Feb 06, 2011 10:25 pm

Ok, this will most likely be the last car I ever build (my S14 is not complete, so continuing that project doesnt count as a new build). I've always had a weak spot for EG civic hatchbacks (notably the Si model, especially in captiva blue pearl). I've owned 2 previous Eg's. A 1993 Si and a 1993 Vx. The Si was built GSR turbo (stolen) and the Vx was GSR with bolt ons (sold). After selling my last EG, I vowed to never return to FWD cars and picked up a few 240sx's until finally settling on my 1997 Kouki. Built that car and realized, I miss my EG!!! My old EG's I still consider to be the funnest cars I've ever driven. The S14 is fun, but scary as hell at the same time. So after months of debating and searching, I found a clean 1992 Captiva Blue Pearl Si hatchback BONE STOCK!! The car was also a southern California car its whole life, so I knew the chassis would be rust free!! Car had 210K miles, but the D16 still runs like a champ!! A/c doesnt work, but who cares its getting thrown out eventually anyways!! Pics of civic after I picked it up and gave it a bath.....

Now I have other priorities in my life right now, the hatch will be a slow ongoing project. I wont put it behind the backburner, but it will by no means be a weekend project. My plans for the car will be a Autox, time attack track beast. First things first, I like my cars to look good and be fast. First thing that will be getting attention to will be in the "looks" department. I am a JDM enthusiast, but not a die hard JDM fanboy! With that being said, the car will maintain a slight JDm appearance, but I will be letting you know that I am NOT gonna be spending outrageous amounts of money for Authentic OEM JDM parts. While a few will be authentic, most parts will be good quality replica parts. I want to focus as much money as I can on performance. I am also old school JDM, and low offset wheels on civics looks horible IMO as well as different color engine bays. I will be going towards a Spoon Sports look. The exterior of the car is in really great shape for a 1992. No Dents at all. A few small dings and scratches are about it, with the biggest flaw being a couple large scratches on the rear bumper (no big deal). The paint is in pretty good shape, but doesnt really matter as the enire car (minus the engine bay) will be getting resprayed in the lovely OEM captiva blue pearl. Now because of my stubborness to only want a Si model, the car will be on the heavy side (as far as EG hatches are concerned). So I will be shedding weight any and everywhere possible! The easiest (although not cost effective) way to do this is to replace stock steel body panels with Carbon fiber replacements!! Picked up a replacement OEM style CF hood and CF hatch/tail gate.

I also had a CF duckbill spoiler in the attic from my last EG which i never installed as well as ABS spoon 'style" power mirrors. I installed the mirrors (which were lighter) and fitment was really good.

    Pic of duckbill

Also installed OEM JDM EG6 stanley headlights (lighter than stock glass USDM specs) and Vision smoked amber corners.....

Keeping up with the Spoon Sports theme, I picked up a set of black Rota slipstreams in 15x7. Even though I wanted the real Spoon SW388's, I dont justify spending that type of money for those wheels. This will be a track car, if I fuck up a Spoon wheel then I will be fucked as it would be nearly impossible to find one SW388. With the Rota's I can say fuck it and buy a single one for like $150 shipped.
Here is a pic, dont mind the monster truck ride height, that will be addressed in the future when I start with the suspension.

Also bought a antenae delete cover and got rid of my antenae assembly also resulting in a small weight savings...

Still have quite a few exterior things I want to get before I move onto suspension, including:
    password JDM thin side moldings
password JDM yellow OEM EG6 foglights
VIS racing CF spoon style front lip
    Rear windshield wiper delete
OEM JDM smoked amber side markers (will be modifying stock fenders for these to save money vs purchasing OEM JDM EG6 fenders)

Interior mods will be very simple. Eventually the car will be gutted and fitted with a single bucket seat and welded in roll cage. For the time being I did swap out to a low mileage (42,000 KM) OEM white faced JDM EG6 cluster. Didnt replace the bezel because I am waiting on my OEM JDM EG6 clock.

That is all that I have done to it so far. Next on the list for the car is a little body work and a respray. After that is done, I will be swapping over to the CF and exterior JDM pieces. Suspension will follow that. I have a set of adjustable Koni yellows and will be ordering Ground Control coilovers w/top hats to supplement the Koni's. ASR subframe brace, beaks lower tie bar, 24mm ASR rear swaybar, 3 point front strut bar and Function7 LCA's will also be called upon to stiffen the chassis and make it handle like a dream.

Performance duties will be handled by a late model (due to more agressive cams)K24a2
TSX swap. I already picked up a freshly rebuilt EP3 5-speed tranny to go along with this swap. Eventually this powerplant will be supercharged for instant throttle boost response to handle the hairpin turns during time attack sessions. This will be the most expensive part of the project also meaning it will be the longest part of the build. Will update thread when car progresses along.

Hell yes, thanks for joining me in this forum! The ONLY criticism I have is about the ASR reinforcement and the beaks tie bar... you only really need the ASR reinforcement. It'll act as a tie bar. Just tryin to save you money. Looks awesome btw, keep it up pirat

Do you plan on building the k24a2 at all? Honestly if you plan on changing out the pistons and rods among other stuff it would be a lot cheaper to go with another k24 block. The k24a4s are easy to find and way cheaper. Here is a thread that helped me with my k24 endeavors, though I just stuck with a full tsx swap. Since I have no intentions other than just bolt-ons it was easier all around really.

Also check hybrid racing out for swap parts, my brother got most of his stuff from them for his k swap.

I do plan on upgrading rods and pistons in the future. I will be swapping the motor in and getting it running properly first. Then after money is saved up, I will build the block and get the supercharger. I thought about the whole k24a4 with k20 route, and then found out i can get a complete tsx swap minus tranny from the junkyard for $1200. Thats the part that sold me

1200 is decent. I got mine with 18k miles for 1350 ( great deal ) Since I'm just using my type s tranny it was an easy decision for me. Sale me what you take out of that k when you do : )

Thanks guys, hopefully have time this weekend to buy the painting supplies and have my homie spray it.
I'm probably gonna hold on to the hood, IDK how much the ex/Si clusters go for, say $50?

    Just a little update.....

Removed the rear wiper assembly and motor and replaced with the OEM Honda wiper delete plug. Saved a few pounds..

Also received a package from password JDM containing my yellow foglights, OEM Stanley side markers, and dry carbon fiber replacement foglights covers....

Dropping the car off today at the body shop to drill the holes in the fenders for the side markers.

Ok, small update. I received my JDM thin side moldings in the mail today.

Also got the car back from the body shop where they cut the holes for the sidemarkers and where they did some paintless dent removal on all my small door dings. I got the car back late, so it was too dark to take a pic. Will take one tomorrow and post. That's it for now. I did come across a complete turn key K24 swap into an EG at a good price. Should be picking that up in the next week or so. Next I'm going to go buy some paint and supplies and my homie is gonna respray the car.
After that, the carbon pieces will be going on as well as the single slammer D16z6 getting yanked out. Stay tuned....

Sorry, the complete single slammer swap is spoken for already. On a side note, haven't been able to do much due to having the flu.

Road course mainly. They offer beginner courses on that road course in Austin. I already got a straight-line and highway beast. Smile
