    1992 240SX Coupe Build

Post by Dstrcto on Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:24 am

Well... A few years back, I wanted something to rip apart and rebuild like new...

I snagged a 1992 240sx SE Coupe with an auto trans that had been sitting for 3 years in a dude's backyard for $300. Dude said a cow had hit it. It took me and Mike 3 days to get it running, most of that was waiting. WD-40 down in the cylinders, cleaned off the spark plugs, replaced the fuel pump, fixed the battery cable and got a used battery. She (or he? haven't decided) fired right up. Burns oil like crazy though.

It's about this time, I begin to get extremely broke and have no extra money whatsoever... so it sits. Til I move. A year or so later. Sad

I moved into an apartment, and didn't have room for it, so Joe, or Joe's dad rather, let me move it behind his house for a bit - they had a multi-car port out back. We pulled the engine/trans there to prepare for the rebuild of everything. That didn't pan out quickly enough... Joe's dad had to move, so did the cars.

JR (Francisco) let me stash it in his back yard, along with a donor car I had acquired shortly after moving (WTF was I thinking?) The donor car was supposed to be the one with a straight body and we'd just swap everything over. We stripped it down and found out the frame was twisted... so we cut off the quarter panel I needed and scrapped the rest. (I still have a ton of extra s13 parts.)

I moved to a different part of town and now I have a car port, so we move all my 240 shiz over here and it's sat and been VERY slowly broken down even further. We stripped the engine bay clean and painted it:

At this point, I realized I wanted to go further with it than I initially planned. Now it's on. Very Happy

Well like Mike said... too bad I didn't realize this before we painted it... We're gonna stitch weld all the seams on the entire chassis, including the engine bay.

    Here's how she stands today:

Knocked out 3/4 of the sound deadening on Saturday night:

I almost forgot- dry ice, being negative 109 degrees fahrenheit, has many uses... I found an excellent one:

    (That's rum and coke btw)

    AND NOW THE UPDATE:
Got a good amount of work done today, here's a recap.

Cleaned up my previous mess, I still have some deadening to knock off the transmission tunnel but the seams are clear and easy to get to with the welder.

Started on the quarter-panel, here's Mike doing his thing, drilling spotwelds

Btw, I did some of this as well, before I am accused of being lazy...

    Drumroll, please...

    TADA!

The underlying layer was pretty jacked up, as you can imagine, so we set to work pulling it as straight as possible

This is after about an hour of pulling, bending, and beating the crap out of it.

You can see where the trunk was creased here

Ultimately, some of the panels on here are going to come off and be replaced along with the quarter panel, but it's looking good so far.

    More coming tomorrow...

Now that I see how it's done, it's actually relatively simple, it just takes time. And hammers. And a hydraulic body repair kit.

Now that the nuclear winter has left, we got more work done today:

Took some more bent up pieces off

Little known fact about Mike, he doesn't actually sit still, he just vibrates so fast you perceive him as sitting still

    The donor

    Almost there

Cut with a cutting wheel. Mike fitted the QP today, and I welded up most of it. Pics to follow, probably tuesday.

To answer your question, we drilled out all the spot welds and used a cutting wheel to cut across the C-pillar.

    Some action shots

Finally got some work done today:

    Scrape, grind, scrape, weld...

One of our various seal sealer removal tools...

    Some of my welds

I'll show you some of Mike's later (they're better than mine, go figure)

This is how it stands as of tonight
